The NAACP Image Awards held the first part of its annual event honoring outstanding people of color in the fields of film, television, music, and literature Sunday, and despite the non-televised nature of the event the stars were out in force.

Mary J. Blige, Morgan Freeman, Kumail Nanjiani, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jordan Peele and Bruno Mars were among the big names at the closed-to-media awards dinner held at the Pasadena Conference Center.

On the red carpet outside, a number of guests and nominees talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the importance of the Image Awards, which is now in its 49th edition.

Anderson is hosting the ceremony at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, which will be broadcast live on TV One. Glover will receive the President’s Award for his professional and philanthropic achievements. And Blige and Jay-Z are the leading nominees at the show that recognizes exceptional work by people of color in film, TV, music and literature..

LOS ANGELES, CA – NAACP Image Awards Committee Chair, Leonard James, III, today announced the Call for Submissions for the 48th NAACP Image Awards Live . The NAACP Image Awards is recognized as the nation’s pre-eminent multi-cultural awards show from an African American point of view.

Submissions for the 48th NAACP Image Awards can be submitted at in the categories of motion picture, television, recording, and literature. Nominees will be announced at a press conference on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. (PT) and the winners will be determined by the vote of the NAACP membership.

The eligibility period for all projects is January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016. In addition, motion picture category projects (and individual achievements within it) must have been initially released and distributed in the U.S. with a minimum commercial theatrical run in Los Angeles or New York for seven (7) consecutive days.
